Should You Buy Renters Insurance Online?

Should you buy renters insurance online? In a word, yes. But it really isn’t as simple as that. You should start your search to buy renters insurance online, but in most cases, you will want to discuss the coverage with an agent before concluding your purchase, to ensure that you are getting the coverage that you really need, and to purchase additional needed insurance that isn’t covered on the renters insurance policy as well.

A renters insurance policy typically includes coverage for damages done in the event of fire, lightening, wind, hail, explosions, riots, aircraft crashes, vehicle crashes, smoke damage, vandalism, theft, volcanic eruptions, falling objects, damage sustained due to the weight of ice, snow, or sleet, water damage that is a result of home utility malfunctions – such as a busted pipe or leaking washing machine, and damages due to electrical surges.

In most cases, renters insurance will not cover damages sustained from floods or earthquakes. To be covered for these types of damages, you will need to purchase separate insurance policies that are specific to those disasters. Often, people confuse flood damage with water damage. These are two different types of damage, and they are not both covered on your policy. Talk to an agent to clarify what type of water damage is covered.

You also need to ensure that you are getting the right type of coverage. There are typically two different classes of coverage when it comes to renters insurance – cash value and replacement costs. Cash value will only pay you what your items are worth at the time of the loss, while replacement costs will pay to replace your lost items – at today’s prices. However, there are limits that the insurance company will pay, no matter what type of policy you have.

You may want to tailor a policy to suit your needs, and in many cases, you will not be able to do this when you buy renters insurance online. In this case, you should do your research for rates and coverage online, but talk to an agent personally before making a purchase.
