"Cheap Renters Insurance" Goes Both Ways

You may want to be more specific if you approach agents asking for "cheap renters insurance"; it calls for a little clarification. It's generally understood that you mean affordable, but when you want affordable, do you mean a low premium or a low payout?

Cheap insurance is something that we all seek to secure for ourselves, and cheap renters insurance is not an exception. By nature, renters insurance is affordable, with regular payments going as low as $10 or $20, depending on the amount and worth of your possessions.

However, low regular payments does not necessarily assure a good payout. Sometimes, the more you pay, the more you are able to collect from your insurance, when the time comes. Depending on the property you have damaged, or the amount of damage done upon your property, the kind of payments you make will define the benefits you are able to receive in due time.

You may think you are taking good care of your possessions, but that is not the only thing that renters insurance seeks to cover! Renters insurance is something you do not wish to forego, as someone who is only renting a place to live. Even if your environment is relatively safe and quiet, anything could happen. You could, for example, damage other people's property by accident - renters insurance can help shoulder the cost of the damages, as well as the cost of a liability lawsuit, should one be filed against you.

You must also be sure of the kind of payout you are paying for. Are you paying for "actual cash value" or "replacement cost"? The former seldom promises to be as useful as the latter. "Actual cash value" is the cost that you paid for a specific item, which the insurance company will seek to recompense, after that item has been damaged. Now say your item has been around for 6 years - it should have significantly depreciated in value since then. If you paid $20 for this item, in 6 years it may cost around $35 - and if you paid for insurance that pays for "actual cash value," the insurance company will still pay you $20. Hardly enough to subsidize your losses.

Cheap renters insurance is something that young people who are just learning how to live on their own could definitely use. So do your research and make sure you get the better end of the deal!
