Home Renters Insurance - What Does It Cover? The term "home renters insurance" could cover any place that you consider a home - but technically, it could also mean renters insurance bought by someone who is renting a whole house. Renters insurance isn't only for people who are renting rooms, after all. It could also cover the damages that may be incurred to the homes of people who are renting entire houses. What good is home renters insurance, in the first place? Your landlord would cover the cost of repair within the premises, as long as you didn't cause the damage, right? Well, the question is - WHAT IF you caused it? What if through some accident, you have caused some damage to property that you did not own? Would this not make you vulnerable to liability lawsuits? This is exactly what renters insurance could protect you from. Liability lawsuits could cost a great deal of money, but if you have found a good provider, and have not been delinquent in your renters insurance payments, you could receive a sizeable compensation, which could cover not only the cost of hiring a lawyer, but also the expenses incurred when going through the liability proceedings. For the record, you could also be prone to liability if you perform renovations or major rearrangements to the place you are renting without informing the necessary parties, i.e. your landlord. As this is not accidental, you may encounter problems if you do not inform both your landlord and your insurance provider of this move before you actually do it. It is best to have everything clear in writing. Home renters insurance is the one thing you could count on if you wish to protect yourself and your posessions from mishaps that are not covered by your basic home insurance. Theft is one of those things. For the most part, you are held responsible for all your possessions, which is why your landlord will not cover the cost of stolen items. And being responsible means taking all necessary precautions so that you will not be caught short-handed in case of theft and other unforeseen events. Securing insurance for your possessions would be part of the duties of a responsible home renter. |
