Renter's Insurance

In the world we live in, things just happen – no matter how cautious we are. When you live in close proximity to other people who, whose actions you have no control over, renter’s insurance is practically a necessity. Renter’s insurance protects your belongings when other people or nature seeks to destroy your property.

Imagine living in an apartment complex, and waking up in the middle of the night to realize that your entire apartment building is on fire – you can get yourself and your family out safely, but there is no time to move all of your belongings out of harms way. You stand on the street with the other residents of the apartment building watching everything you’ve worked for go up in flames. If you don’t have renters insurance, this can be devastating.

On the other hand, if you do have renters insurance, you are covered – unless you started the fire yourself, in which case you will probably be residing in a new home that is provided by the state shortly. But if the fire was not your fault, your renters insurance will pay to replace all covered items in your rented dwelling.

Renters Insurance covers more than just fire and smoke damage. You will be covered for water damage, wind damage, and burglary as well. If someone injures themselves while they are in your rented house, apartment, or condo, your renters insurance will pay their medical bills and lost wages – protecting you from liability.

Renters insurance is typically very inexpensive. Rates are determined by the area that you live in, but typically it costs around two hundred dollars per year for coverage. It is important to note that if you have a roommate, your roommate’s belongings are not covered unless they are listed on your policy. This works two ways – you will not be covered on their policy in most cases. In this case, it is better for each roommate living in the rented dwelling to carry their own renters insurance.

The cost of the insurance is very reasonable, and it is a very small price to pay for the protection that such a policy offers. Again, when you have no control over the actions of the people that live near you, it is nice to know that you will at least be reimbursed for any losses that you incur due to the negligent actions of your neighbors, or as a result of any damage that is done by mother nature.
